Full Fire Ban in Effect!!!

Please be advised that both our host townships have issued complete fire bans which are currently in effect.  This means absolutely no outdoor burning, at any time of day.

No campfires, no fireworks, no candles…  Propane BBQs are alright, but as always, be very attentive as an unattended BBQ could easily catch fire and spread quickly under the current conditions.

Extra caution must be exercised if smoking – never discard a cigarette butt on the ground or out a car window.

Wildfires spread quickly, cause millions of dollars of damage each year and are often accompanied by loss of life.  The current draught conditions are severe and widespread.

Be fire smart and don’t let fire get a start!

New SLCA Website is now live!!

It’s been 12 years since the last redesign of our website and we are happy to launch this new version.

At first glance, it should look familiar in layout and content; however we will now support a wider range of mobile devices, including your smartphones and tablets.

Members and associates of the SLCA will now be able to login into the website giving them an expanded capability to communicate with each, and share important information.

SLCA members will be receiving their login ID’s shortly.

Hope you like it!

MNRF Visits to Steenburg due to Bass Targeting

Hi all, I wanted to clarify from my last post, as I’ve received a couple messages, that all of Steenburg Lake is in Zone 15. It is not split between Zone 18 and 15. Bass season in Zone 15 begins 27 June, and any intended catch and/or catch and release of the species is illegal.

It has been brought to my attention that there have been an increase of incidents of targeting bass. As a result, MNRF Conservation Officers have already visited a couple cottages on our lake and will be patrolling the lake more frequently in the coming weeks.

I encourage members to report offenders, as poaching is illegal, to the MNRF TIPS hotline at

Bass Fishing season on Steenburg Lake

Hi all, Just wanted to provide a gentle reminder for all the avid fishers. As most of us are aware, Spring is spawning period for many fish species and as a result, there are fishing seasons that tell us when we can and can’t catch a certain species.

When a species season is closed, the targeting of that species is illegal, this includes catching and releasing.

Concerns have been raised about bass species being targeted and/or caught on our lake. As we would like to uphold our SLCA values, I wanted to remind everyone that bass season, in our zone as of 2020, opens the fourth Saturday of June (June 27th) and closes November 30th.

This means that bass cannot be targeted, caught & released, and if they are caught, they are to be released immediately (no pictures please).

Catching a male bass at this time takes away from its ability to guard the nest, exposing it to predation. The more times it is caught (you may not be the first one who’s caught it!), the lesser chance the eggs have of survival.

Bottom line is, although we are all eager to get out and cast a line, please be cautious of where you are fishing to limit the impacts of spawning bass! Holding off until June 27th may just help you catch a new record this summer.

Many of us treat our cottage as a playground, and it is important that we all recognise that playgrounds are now closed until further notice. Respect and enjoy your time in the country as sanctuary, and soon enough we will have good reason to celebrate together.

Covid-19 Update

Hello everyone,

It has been a considerable time since we last updated you.  We hope you are all doing well, particularly in these very difficult and uncertain days.

At this time of year as the days get longer, sunnier and warmer, most of us are probably thinking about our cottage properties, particularly as the events of the last couple of weeks likely have us looking for ways to occupy our time and isolate ourselves from potential infection.

Many of us may also be thinking, what better place to self isolate and practice social distancing than at the lake.  This past week, Limerick Township issued a notice about changes they were making and precautions they were taking in an effort to stem the spread of COVID-19 (see full message here).

Anthony Genovese quite correctly pointed out that those of us considering an early visit and stay at the cottage should be mindful not to impact these small rural communities unduly.  The obvious case being that anyone already diagnosed or presumed to be infected, should not be travelling anywhere, and should remain, quarantined at home.  If you are self isolating because of recent travel out of the country, you should also remain home.

If you are otherwise healthy, and showing no symptoms, then a stay at the cottage might be a great option, as long as we all continue to practice social distancing and do not become a burden on local food stores and medical facilities.

Indeed, it is well worth considering that if there is even the most remote chance of possibly requiring any kind of medical attention, emergency or otherwise, it would probably be best not to seek that assistance in a rural setting like Bancroft which would not be equipped to handle a sudden surge of cases.

An article featured this week in an email from Cottage Life, sums it up pretty well, but fails to mention the unintentional impact we may have on these small communities…

Though normally merchants and area businesses would welcome our support, best to leave the limited resources of these small communities to those most in need of them at this time.  We can best help them through these difficult economic times by showing them our support once it is safe to do so.

If you do make the decision to take up residence at the lake in the next few weeks, please be considerate of others, and come fully stocked and ready for your stay.  Avoid the temptation of socializing with friends and neighbours whom we haven’t seen in many months, and if we do encounter one another, lets keep our safe distances while being supportive of one another in these difficult times. Do not help to import this contagion to these small, vulnerable communities.  “Walk to exercise, not socialize!”

Your SLCA have been working on a number of key initiatives and were already planning a number of exciting announcements for this coming season at the lake.  Rest assured there will be more information to come in the weeks ahead as we all grapple with the changing realities we now face in light of these unprecidented challenges.  Check your steenburglake.com website regularly for updates and announcements and share information through social media like the Steenburg Lake Facebook group

Make sure we have your current contact information (mailing address, phone number and email address). Any updates should be directed by email to membership@steenburglake.com .

Please stay safe, stay calm and stay positive.  Be Steenburg Strong!
