SLCA AED returned to Cochranes’ home

Please be advised that effective today, the Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) has been returned to the Cochranes’ home at 689 Steenburg Lake North Road.  Signage is posted at their driveway as well as their shoreline (the old Hughes property) in the northwest quadrant of the lake.

As always, if you suspect a potential Sudden Cardiac Arrest, contact 911 first, then reach out to Mike and Donna at 613-474-3167 to arrange pick up as quickly as possible.

It is highly recommended that you familiarize yourself with this device to save time and confusion in an emergency.  Instructions and a demonstration video are available here https://steenburglake.info/aed-usage

Thank you to Carl and Mary-Lou Stefanski for hosting the AED for the past several weeks.

Stay safe everyone, especially on or around thining ice and rapid flowing waters.

Temporary Relocation of SLCA AED

Have a safe and happy holiday and all the best for 2022.

Looking back while looking forward…

Greetings to all friends and neighbours of our Steenburg Lake community on this, the eve of the holiday season.

Although the current COVID-19 pandemic and the latest Omicron variant are giving us all a lot to be concerned about both locally and worldwide, it is worth noting that we have learned a great deal about what it takes to stay safe and protect each other.

This pandemic has been a test of almost every aspect of our society and civilization.  It has tested our government leaders, our health care system, our elder-care system, our scientific community, our education system, our supply chains and manufacturing capabilities, our retail sector, and our hospitality, tourism, and entertainment industries to name just a few of the most obvious cases.

Some have fared much better than others and the virus has exposed many failures and shortcomings that already existed and have yet to be addressed.

It has also tested all of us as individuals and as families and communities.  Again some have fared better than others, but for the most part, we have proven that we are up for the challenge.  Let’s not let our guard down now!

I am confident that we will eventually emerge from this as a better and stronger society, and that we will have learned the important lessons of compassion, patience, generosity, tolerance, and understanding that are being taught to us each day.  Let’s be attentive!

On behalf of all of your SLCA volunteers, I wish you and your loved ones a safe and joyful Christmas or however you choose to mark this time of year, and the very best for the New Year ahead.  Looking forward to seeing you all around the lake we hold so dearly.

Sincerely,

Pat Stallaert – SLCA President

Save the Date!!!

Coalition of the Naive

While dealing with our daily lives, it is often easy to loose sight of events happening half a world away.  Fortunately, we have some  excellent local media like The Bancroft Times and The Bancroft This Week, to keep us current on what’s happening near and afar.

I responded to just such an opportunity this past week with a letter to the editor of The Bancroft This Week (follow link to read).

They say it is important to learn from our mistakes lest we repeat them again.  The situation that has been unfolding in Afghanistan the past few weeks is likely an epic example of that.

Plenty more summer to be enjoyed

This is just a reminder that we will be holding the Have-a Dock Jamboree, dock concert on Saturday September 4th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Drop your anchor off from the Coties’ dock located at 727 the North Road. Be prepared to be entertained.

Once again, this will be a charitable event in support of the North Hastings Children Services given that they have not been able to raise funds in their traditional ways such as bake sales, golf tourneys and bazaars for the past two years because of COVID pandemic restrictions. The need has not gone away, in fact if anything, it has increased as economic hardships for many continue.

Please come out for a fun filled afternoon on the water and help support this great local cause. Donations can be made through the SLCA by etransfer to DonateNHCS@SteenburgLake.com or by cash or cheque the day of the event. Cheques should be made out to the “Steenburg Lake Community Association” with a memo of “NHCS donation” please

Hope to see you all there, and thank you for your support!
