Illegal Snowmobile Surfing on Lake

Bancroft OPP confirmed they were not able to dispatch a car quickly enough to apprehend the snowmobilers on our lake this time, however, they would like everyone to know that deliberately submerging a vehicle is illegal and carries stiff penalties.

Anyone seeing this behaviour is encouraged to contact the OPP using the non-emergency 1-888-310-1122, or calling 911 if public safety is at risk.

In addition, identifying information such as license plates or snowmobile registration numbers can be provided to the OPP after the fact, and they will follow-up with an investigation.

Careless driving of a snowmobile is prescribed within section 15 of the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. M.44. It carries fines up to $1,000.

Eyewitnesses can also share pictures or observations with the SLCA over email at LakeWatch@steenburglake.com.

  1. Limerick Township working on this issue: During the June 14 Limerick Township planning committee meeting, Mayor Carl Stefanski brought up an issue that had the potential to become more serious on Limerick’s lakes; snowmobile water racing, or skipping. The committee pledged to find out if there was a bylaw in place within the township to prohibit this activity and also to investigate with the OPP if anything can be done on their end. While there is currently no bylaw in place to prevent water skipping, Victoria Tisdale, the clerk and treasurer, says she hopes to have something in place by the end of the summer.
