Plenty more summer to be enjoyed

This is just a reminder that we will be holding the Have-a Dock Jamboree, dock concert on Saturday September 4th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Drop your anchor off from the Coties’ dock located at 727 the North Road. Be prepared to be entertained.

Once again, this will be a charitable event in support of the North Hastings Children Services given that they have not been able to raise funds in their traditional ways such as bake sales, golf tourneys and bazaars for the past two years because of COVID pandemic restrictions. The need has not gone away, in fact if anything, it has increased as economic hardships for many continue.

Please come out for a fun filled afternoon on the water and help support this great local cause. Donations can be made through the SLCA by etransfer to DonateNHCS@SteenburgLake.com or by cash or cheque the day of the event. Cheques should be made out to the “Steenburg Lake Community Association” with a memo of “NHCS donation” please

Hope to see you all there, and thank you for your support!

Be Wake Aware! and other updates…

A magnificent summer is currently unfolding on Steenburg Lake.  Last Saturday we were treated to an amazing concert by the popular British Invasion band. It was a pleasure to work with the Lads to make this concert possible. A special thank you goes out to Brian Fraser of Adamson Systems Engineering for the loan of some pretty amazing sound equipment.  And remember, events like these are made possible by your membership fees in the SLCA.  If you haven’t yet made your payment this year, please do so at your earliest convenience.  Your $30 payment can be remitted online here  or contact membership@Steenburglake.com to make payment by cash or checque.  Help be a part of this amazing waterside community!

September 4th, we will have the pleasure of another Have-a-dock Jamboree off the Coties’ dock.  This will once again be a benefit concert with donations being directed to the North Hastings Children Services.  More details on how you can make a donation to this worthy cause will follow shortly.

Our friends at FOCA, working with the Muskoka Lakes Association and the Safe Quiet Lakes organization have provided the following short video to help remind us all of the impacts our boat wakes can have on our lake, its wildlife, shorelines, other users of the lake and properties surrounding the lake.  We highly recommend everyone take a minute to view this video and be reminded of the impact they may be having…

Don’t let the calendar fool you.  There is plenty of summer and fun to be had!  More events are planned so check back often to see what’s happening and how you can participate.

Have a great summer, stay well and stay safe!

Summer Update

Seems that summer snuck in earlier this week when I wasn’t watching…  so here is an update for you from your SLCA.

As you no doubt already know, COVID infection numbers are down across the country with the exception of a few localized hotspots like Waterloo and the Porcupine Region of Northern Ontario.  Things are looking very promising for the summer thanks to a high uptake of vaccinations.  Despite all these positive indicators, we must not lose sight of the fact that there is still a very deadly virus out in our communities, and that the latest highly-infectious delta variant is rapidly becoming the dominant strain.  Use caution when interacting with others, and follow all public health guidelines.  Most importantly, get vaccinated!

As indicated on this website, in our spring newsletter and on the Steenburg Lake Facebook group, canvassers will NOT be going door to door again this summer, collecting SLCA membership dues, but your dues can be paid online via Paypal of Interact eTransfer (see  https://forms.steenburglake.com/Membership.html ) or by cheque.  Your dues help to make events and other programs possible.  If you meet new neighbours, be sure to tell them of all the benefits of being a member of the SLCA and have them contact membership@steenburglake.com

As mentioned in our spring newsletter, we have been working with interested parties around the lake to bring you some fun and COVID-safe events this summer.  The first of which is the Canada Day boat parade happening at 4 pm on July 1.  Contact Selena Bruni or Christiane Langman to register your boat.

We are also pleased to announce, the return of the British Invasion band for an open-air concert at the Patricks’ cottage just west of the public beach on Saturday, August 14th at 3:00 pm.  Anchor your boat off from their dock and be prepared to be enchanted by this very talented group of musicians playing all the old hits from across the pond from bands like the Beatles, the Who, the Kinks, Herman’s Hermits, the Dave Clarke 5 and many more.  Visit the band’s website at https://www.thebritishinvasion.ca/events/2020/8/4/steenburg- lake-on-hcafz for more information and a sampling of their performances including a short video from last year’s Steenburg Lake concert.

More events are planned so stay tuned for updates…

Exciting new Steenburg Lake merchandise is again available this summer.  Contact Merchandise@steenburglake.com to place an order or to arrange pick up of previously ordered items.

And for those of you trying to keep up with what’s going on with the Townships (and I hope you all are…) check out the latest Letter to the Editor of the Bancroft This Week on the subject of Accessibility in Tudor and Cashel Township at https://en.calameo.com/read/003289257d75b0da2ebad

Have a safe and enjoyable summer.  Hope to see you on the water…

Illegal Snowmobile Surfing on Lake

Bancroft OPP confirmed they were not able to dispatch a car quickly enough to apprehend the snowmobilers on our lake this time, however, they would like everyone to know that deliberately submerging a vehicle is illegal and carries stiff penalties.

Anyone seeing this behaviour is encouraged to contact the OPP using the non-emergency 1-888-310-1122, or calling 911 if public safety is at risk.

In addition, identifying information such as license plates or snowmobile registration numbers can be provided to the OPP after the fact, and they will follow-up with an investigation.

Careless driving of a snowmobile is prescribed within section 15 of the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. M.44. It carries fines up to $1,000.

Eyewitnesses can also share pictures or observations with the SLCA over email at LakeWatch@steenburglake.com.

The Steenburg Lake Community Association is committed to protecting our most valued asset, and we will work with the authorities to support our members, as appropriate.

Gradual, logical and cautious reopening of the US Border

The following email was sent today to both Daryl Kramp MPP for Hastings – Prince Edward and Derek Sloan MP for Hastings-Lennox and Addington:

Dear Mr. Kramp and Mr. Sloan,

I am writing to you today to ask for your support in advancing the gradual and prudent reopening of the Canada  – U.S. border to American citizens who own land, typically summer homes, in Hastings County.  These individuals, many of which have owned land and paid taxes in our communities for generations, should be allowed to return for long-term occupancy of their residences in Hastings County.

Given the very high rate of vaccination for COVID-19 in the USA, there is very little likelihood that these individuals if properly immunized, should present a threat of spreading the Corona virus, any more than Canadian citizens.  Surely, there must be a way to allow these members of our community an opportunity to return after more than a year of denied access.

Please help raise these concerns and persuade your colleagues in your respective legislatures to reopen the Canada – US border as soon as possible to allow the safe return of our friends and neighbours so they can again contribute to their Canadian communities, and renew their love affair with Canada!

Respectfully,

Pat Stallaert

An open letter to Tudor and Cashel Council

As I have been encouraging all of you with property in the Township of Tudor and Cashel, Heather and I responded to the survey they enclosed with our interim tax bill.  I sent a copy of my response to the editor of the Bancroft This Week, and they published it both in print and online.  That text is available here:

http://www.bancroftthisweek.com/?p=11429

Warning, it’s a bit of a read…  They were actually supposed to print a shorter, revised portion of that letter with some corrections following some fact-checking I did.

  1.  Trent Hills is actually in Northumberland, not Hastings County, but here again, it is a much larger, more populated municipality that resulted from the merger of multiple townships, and includes the towns of Campbellford and Hastings.
  2. Tyendinaga does not use wards, or at least it hasn’t since some time in the 1800s.
  3. Hastings Highlands did away with their wards in 2017 but not by referendum as I was originally lead to believe, but by an order in council following much research and public consultation which included hiring expert consultants to review all their options.  The decision was appealed by a few residents to the OMB, but was upheld because they had done their homework, and presented a defensible argument for the elimination of wards in that municipality.

If you had not submitted your survey by the March 29th deadline, it is not too late to write to this council and let them know your concerns, especially before their April meeting on the 6th.

Happy Easter everyone.  Stay safe and remain patient.  Better days are on their way…

Urgent Spring Reminder…

Another beautiful day here up at the lake, and the forecast calls for a long stretch of warm weather to usher in a much awaited spring.

Before we all get terribly busy with our outdoor plans, I’d just like to offer a couple of quick reminders of two very important tasks that urgently need your attention.

The first applies to those members who have properties in the Township of Tudor & Cashel.  I urge you to make copies of the Township’s Electoral Ward Survey that was sent out with your interim tax bill this month.  Please fill these out and ensure every voting member of your family property fills one out.  You can send these back by email to the clerk@tudorandcashel.com

This Council has an indefensible record of doing, and NOT doing whatever it likes!  That’s why it is so imperative that we don’t let the few decide what is best for the many.  Please make sure to respond to the survey before the  March 29th deadline, and in time to send a clear message back to T&C Council before they meet again in April.

The second point is to remind all members who are dissatisfied with the current internet options on the lake, or the lack of options, to fill out the short survey provided by Northern Rural Networks (NRN).  A link to that survey can be found by clicking here.

Keep in mind that there is no commitment in proceeding with them, and for those who cannot justify an internet service at their seasonal property, it’s worth repeating that NRN offer very flexible suspension options for their services.

Regardless what internet provider ends up establishing a high-speed option here on Steenburg Lake, be aware that it is hugely important that we have an accurate representation of the level of interest in our community if we are ever to attract a service provider.  Whether that means a new competitor like NRN, or good old Ma Bell,  we need to let them know that there is a viable business case in expanding in our area!

Hope you have a great day.  Stay the course and stay safe… vaccines are on their way.
